Join us for our sixth Nerd Nite in Bloomington! We all know that learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends and colleagues. Nerd Nite is an event held in more than 120 cities across the globe during which several folks give 15 minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along. It’s like the Discovery Channel… with beer! Imagine learning about everything from math feuds or the science of the Simpsons, to the genealogy of Godzilla or debunking beer myths, while having a few or a few too many.

1) Sex on Six Legs: The Secret Lives of Wasps and Flies

Insects are the most diverse group of animals on the planet accounting for more than half of all known living species on Earth. Bug sex, like bugs themselves, is quite diverse. From detachable penises, loud sex that becomes fatal, and sexual cannibalism, sex on six legs is never boring by human standards. What do thistle tortoise beetles and the tuberous bush cricket have in common? Grab a drink and find out!
Kylie Dannatt is a Gender Studies PhD student by day, bug enthusiast by night. When they aren’t searching for bugs, Kylie is committed to research and praxis pertaining to contraception and reproductive justice.
2) In Pursuit of the Perfect Map

Whether for exploring the world, claiming territory, or the much-beloved practice of collecting taxes, maps have been shaping and reshaping our societies for thousands of years. However much we try though, our maps always have inaccuracies—whether intentional or not. Together we’ll (very) briefly examine the history of maps, consider the approaches to address these inaccuracies, and try to determine what is the perfect map.
Andy Petersen is a librarian and taxonomist with zero formal cartographic education. When he started a job at a mapping company, he figured it was high time he learn a little something about maps.
3) Malicious Molasses: The Stickiest Situation in American History?

Boston has been host to some of the most major moments in American History. But you might not think to visit the site of a disaster of sticky proportions right off the Freedom Trail that resulted in the deaths of 21 people and a lawsuit that forever changed the landscape of corporations’ accountability to the public in the United States. Fair warning: You’ll never be able to look at a jar of molasses the same again.
Molly Beausir is from the Northside of Indianapolis and loves to nerd out about strange and underknown stories from history. She listens to music constantly, especially the indie-pop-rock-folk variety, and she’s trying to get over the fact that last year her music age from the Spotify Wrap was 80. She has two bear sized black dogs named Wally & Mac, and loves to try every single new coffee shop that pops up in Indy.
